Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson believes Jean-Phillipe Mateta's counter-attack goal changed the tone of Saturday's eventual 2-2 draw at Manchester City.
Palace looked set for a third defeat on the bounce at the Etihad as goals either side of half-time from Jack Grealish and Rico Lewis handed City a two-goal lead. Pep Guardiola's side dominated possession but failed to kill the game off and were handed a nervy finish when Mateta tapped in from close-range.
The Eagles striker was then fouled by Phil Foden inside the penalty area, allowing Michael Olise to equalise from the spot in added-time. It was unlikely point for a much-depleted Palace side and Hodgson praised their resilience in resisting City pressure before pouncing on the break.

"I was really pleased with the team, from the first minute to the last, for the way that the players stuck to a gameplan and tried to make it work, and cause Man City a few more problems in terms of creating chances than they are sometimes used to," Hodgson admitted. "It wasn’t just a question of resilience – it was a question of spirit and determination as well.
"If we’d have wanted excuses for a defeat today, we had loads and loads of them. When you’ve seven players injured and five of them are regulars in the attacking positions, we’ve got even more reason to say “well done today” boys.
"Our first goal changed things really. Michael Olise was posing a few questions with his skill when he got up into that half of the field and I thought Jean-Philippe Mateta was excellent all through the game with his running and holding the ball up."
Palace were able to stay narrow and absorb
