Rock Hudson had ‘traumatic experience’ kissing Linda Evans on ‘Dynasty’

AIDS diagnosis — himself included. The Hollywood heartthrob had made a guest appearance on the hit soap opera “Dynasty” in 1984, just months after he first found out he’d tested positive for HIV, the virus which causes AIDS.According to Stephen Kijak, director of the new documentary “Rock Hudson: All That Heaven Allowed,” Hudson was “terrified” of kissing co-star Linda Evans, as he was scared he would give her a “lethal injection” of his illness. The “Giant” star had concealed his disease from the public and even had used a medley of oral hygiene products like mouthwash in an attempt to protect Evans, 80.“Nobody knew,” Kijak told Fox News recently.

‘Desperate Souls, Dark City and the Legend of Midnight Cowboy’ Review: A Documentary About What Made a New Hollywood Classic Indelible

Owen Gleiberman Chief Film Critic A movie, good, bad or indifferent, is always “about” something. But some movies are about more things than others, and as you watch “Desperate Souls, Dark City and the Legend of Midnight Cowboy,” Nancy Buirski’s rapt, incisive, and beautifully exploratory making-of-a-movie documentary, what comes into focus is that “Midnight Cowboy” was about so many things that audiences could sink into the film as if it were a piece of their own lives. The movie was about loneliness. It was about dreams, sunny yet broken. It was about gay male sexuality and the shock of really seeing it, for the first time, in a major motion picture. It was about the crush and alienation of New York City: the godless concrete carnival wasteland, which had never been captured onscreen with the telephoto authenticity it had here. The movie was also about the larger sexual revolution — what the scuzziness of “free love” really looked like, and the overlap between the homoerotic and hetero gaze. It was about money and poverty and class and how they could tear your soul apart. It was about how the war in Vietnam was tearing the soul of America apart. It was about a new kind of acting, built on the realism of Brando, that also went beyond it.

Ryan Murphy Denies Allegations That ‘American Horror Story’ Crew Will Be ‘Blackballed’ if They Don’t Cross Picket Lines

Joe Otterson TV Reporter As WGA pickets continue to mobilize at the remaining TV shows in both New York and Los Angeles, at least one Ryan Murphy-produced show was the focus of striking writers’ efforts on Wednesday: “American Horror Story: Delicate.” The show is currently shooting on 52nd street in Manhattan, according to several WGA East member Twitter feeds — including one person who posted video of star Kim Kardashian entering the production. “It doesn’t appear that @KimKardashian is a friend of the labor movement. She just now crossed our picket line to work on Ryan Murphy’s @AHSFX Hamptons, shooting here on 52nd in NYC,” wrote “The Blacklist” exec producer and WGA strike captain T Cooper on his Twitter account.

‘Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken’ Review: DreamWorks Wrestles With How to Train Its Kraken Concept

Peter Debruge Chief Film Critic If you’re going to make a movie about a kraken — those giant multi-tentacled sea monsters believed to wrestle ships from below — then computer animation is hands down the way to go. The trouble with doing so at a major American studio is that it comes with the imperative to turn these fantastical creatures into cutesy-wootsy kid-movie fodder, which is precisely what DreamWorks Animation does with the reasonably clever myth-twisting toon “Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken.” The creative team’s high-concept take suggests “Twilight” as a (literal) fish-out-of-water comedy, wherein a family of blue-skinned squid-things attempt to pass as human. Fifteen years ago, Flora (voiced by Toni Collette) and Peter (Colman Domingo) abandoned the ocean to raise their kids on land. Despite the obvious hurdles — their conspicuous cerulean tint, floppy limbs and invertebrate status — they’ve been reasonably successful at blending in. Anytime someone looks suspicious, Ruby (Lana Condor) just says she’s from Canada, and that does the trick. But Ruby’s not nearly as comfortable with her own otherness, which she’s spent her entire life trying to disguise. All of that gets a lot more difficult a few days before prom, when she dives into the sea to save her crush, Connor (Jaboukie Young-White). Contact with water awakens something deep within Ruby and releases her inner kraken.

‘Rock Hudson: All That Heaven Allowed’ Review: HBO Doc a Solid Presentation of Actor’s Life

HBO documentary, would have taken to the grave if he could have.“Rock Hudson: All That Heaven Allowed” is in the vein of other prominent documentaries aimed at telling the real story behind the Old Hollywood façade, including HBO’s most recent “The Last Movie Stars.” The revelations within the documentary’s 104-minute runtime aren’t revolutionary, but seek to give viewers an authentic look at a man whose life so often was swathed in artifice. It’s impossible to underscore Hudson’s appeal to viewers when he burst onto the scene in 1948.

For many, who perhaps came to know him later, Rock Hudson was known as one of the first Hollywood stars to die of AIDS in the mid-1980s. The shocker of it all was that, throughout his legendary career, mainly in the 1950s and ‘60s was that he was one of Hollywood’s most iconic leading men— the embodiment of romantic masculinity and heterosexuality.

‘Rock Hudson: All That Heaven Allowed’ Shines a Light On The Secret Life Of A Hollywood Icon [Tribeca]

Director Stephen Kijak does something disarmingly unexpected with the opening minutes of his biographical documentary “Rock Hudson: All That Heaven Allowed.” He gives us the de rigueur rapid-fire “why he mattered” montage, of course; it’s all but written into law for films like this. But while most bio-docs make that their credit sequence (usually ending on a profound quote from the subject, and then a hard cut to title), this one puts it after the title and the real opening; the pre-title sequence here is a mini-fantasia, a very queer visualization of one of Hudson’s dreams, a vivid illustration of how he saw himself.
