UPDATED, 3:27 PM: A lawsuit filed against Netflix by subjects of its 2018 docuseries Afflicted has been dropped after nearly four years.
The plaintiffs’ attorney filed court papers Tuesday with Judge Armen Tamzarian asking that the case be dismissed with prejudice, meaning it cannot be refiled. The court papers do not state why the case was not being pursued further or whether a settlement was reached.
Claiming defamation, fraud and invasion of privacy, the suit filed in August 2019 alleged that the plaintiffs were duped by the streamer and other defendants into participating in “a salacious reality television program that questioned the existence of their chronic illnesses and portrayed them as lazy, crazy hypochondriacs and/or malingerers.”
The suit also lists Doc Shop Productions, series creator Dan Partland and other producers as defendants.
PREVIOUSLY, August 2019: Netflix is being sued for defamation, fraud and invasion of privacy by subjects of its 2018 unscripted series Afflicted about people with chronic illnesses.
The 50-page complaint (read it here) was filed Wednesday in Los Angeles Superior Court by defendants including Jamison Hill, Pilar Olave, Jill Edelstein and Bekah Dinnerstein. Referred to in the suit as “the Afflicted Four,” they claim they were “duped by Plaintiffs into participating in a salacious reality television program that questioned the existence of their chronic illnesses and portrayed Plaintiffs as lazy, crazy, hypochondriacs and/or malingerers who were deserving of scorn and who in fact have received scorn and abuse because of Defendants’ cruel and duplicitous actions.”

A case in the name of nine women was filed in the U.S. District Court for Nevada, alleging that the disgraced actor and comedian exercised his “enormous power, fame and prestige” to isolate and sexually assault the individuals named in the case. Per NBC News, a group of the women will speak in an interview on “NBC News Daily” on Thursday. Pam Joy Abeyta, Lili Bernard, Rebecca Cooper, Janice Dickinson, Lise-Lotte Lublin, Linda Kirkpatrick, Janice Baker Kinney, Angela Leslie and Heidi Thomas are named in the case. Cosby was convicted of a criminal sexual assault charge in Pennsylvania in April 2018. However, in 2021, the actor was released from prison after spending nearly three years behind the bars; the conviction was overturned by the state Supreme Court. The actor, now 85 years old, has discussed plans for a comedy tour.
