Firefighters have begun a second day at the scene of a blaze at a former hotel in Wigan. Crews were called out to Bolton Road, in Ashton-in-Makerfield, shortly before 7pm last night (January 23) after a fire broke out at the derelict former Rockleigh Hotel.
A stretch of Bolton Road, between Edward Drive and the Esso fuel station, remains closed in both directions this morning (Wednesday) while emergency services are at the scene. Four fire engines scrambled to the blaze last night.
One eyewitness told the Manchester Evening News: "I was working and then I could smell the smoke. I came outside and that’s when I saw the fire and the wind was blowing smoke my way. It was massive."

In a statement issued this morning, a spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “Just before 7pm yesterday evening (Tuesday, January 23) firefighters were called to reports of a building fire on Bolton Road, in Ashton-in-Makerfield, Wigan. Four fire engines from Wigan, Hindley, Leigh and Atherton fire stations arrived quickly at the scene, which involved a former hotel building.
"Crews have worked through the night wearing breathing apparatus using hose reels to make the scene safe. GMFRS remain in attendance.”
The abandoned former hotel has previously been earmarked for demolition to make way for affordable housing. Developer Jigsaw Homes has been approached for comment.
