May December has said he is “offended” by the film.Directed by Todd Haynes (Carol, I’m Not There), May December is a darkly dramatic film starring Natalie Portman as an actress who is preparing to play the part of Julianne Moore’s character Gracie in a film. Gracie is infamous for her long-term relationship with Melton’s character Joe, which began when he was only 13 years old.Screenwriter Samy Burch has confirmed that Gracie and Joe were inspired by the real life story of Mary Kay Letourneau and Vili Fualaau.
Former teacher Letourneau was convicted at the age of 34 of raping then-12-year-old Fualaau. The two married in 2005, shortly after Letourneau was released from prison. The couple divorced in 2019, and Letourneau died in 2020.
Now, Fualaau has spoken about the film to The Hollywood Reporter, saying the producers never contacted him personally when it was coming together.“If they had reached out to me,” he said. “If they had reached out to me, we could have worked together on a masterpiece.
Instead, they chose to do a ripoff of my original story.”“I’m offended by the entire project and the lack of respect given to me, who lived through a real story and is still living it.”“I love movies – good movies,” Fualauu continued. “And I admire ones that capture the essence and complications of real-life events.
You know, movies that allow you to see or realise something new every time you watch them.“Those kinds of writers and directors – someone who can do that – would be perfect to work with, because my story is not nearly as simple as this movie [portrays],” he added.May December is tipped to receive several Oscar nominations, and Portman, Melton and Moore are all nominated for Golden Globes for their performances. Wow. The Oscar nominations dropped Tuesday morning, and there were some pretty big omissions — led, of course, by the magical Margot Robbie, who inexplicably got shut out of the Best Actress race.
Variety breaks down the biggest snubs and surprises of the 2024 Oscar nominations. SNUB: Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig, “Barbie”The powerhouse duo responsible for the biggest movie of the year found love in other categories —Robbie is included in the film’s best picture nomination as a producer and Gerwig saw her screenplay (with co-writer Noah Baumbach) recognized. But Robbie ultimately missed on the competitive best actress lineup while Gerwig was shut out of director.SURPRISE: America Ferrera, “Barbie”Though its leading lady and director didn’t land nominations, “Barbie” co-star Ferrera was able to score a supporting actress nod for her role in the megahit, despite missing out at SAG Awards and Golden Globes.
As predicted, there were few major surprises with the announcement of the 76th Academy Awards nominations, but there were enough to raise an eyebrow or two. Of course, “Oppenheimer” and “Poor Things” dominated the proceedings with 13 and 11 nominations with “Killers of the Flower Moon” earning 10 nods and “Barbie” taking 8.
Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer continued its commanding awards showing this morning, clocking a leading 13 BAFTA noms. Disappearing from the season’s leading pack, however, was Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, which only clocked five noms after being longlisted in 15 categories.

Charles Melton has had a good year; although saying farewell to Riverdale hit him hard, he went head-to-head with Natasha Lyonne for an episode of Poker Face and earned a Golden Globe nomination for his role in Todd Haynes’ May December. Sandwiched between Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore, the U.S.-born actor with Korean roots handled himself impeccably, playing the husband of Gracie (Moore), an older woman once sent to prison for molesting him as a minor. Melton brings a diffident grace to the part, which is crucial to the film’s unfolding when actress Elizabeth Berry (Portman) turns up.

Clayton Davis Senior Awards Editor The SAG Awards nominations provided an exciting blend of usual suspects and stunning omissions. For some awards season strategists — particularly the ones behind critically adored films like “Anatomy of a Fall” and “May December” — there’s no choice but to ask, “what happened?” The SAG Awards’ pearl anniversary brought expected mentions for Oscar contenders such as the two summer smash hits “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer,” leading the tally for all movies with four nominations each. In addition, the crime epic “Killers of the Flower Moon” and the satirical dramedy “American Fiction” managed three mentions.

Jon Burlingame Taking an old film score and dropping it into a new film is “like wearing somebody else’s underwear,” veteran composer Earle Hagenused to say. Hagen, the Oscar-nominated, Emmy-winning composer of such classic themes as “The Andy Griffith Show,” “The Dick VanDyke Show” and “The Mod Squad,” would have been appalled by the musical choices in Netflix’s “May December.” A scene from that film, with Julianne Moore opening her refrigerator door to a melodramatic piano cue, has gone viral. It’s a funny moment if you don’t recognize that music.
