Briana Middleton, one of the leads of Apple TV+’s upcoming movie Sharper, has been tapped by the streamer to headline its high-profile drama series Metropolis, inspired by Fritz Lang’s classic 1927 science fiction film. Middleton is the first actor cast in the project, from Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail and UCP where he is under an overall deal.

After releasing in the U.K last month, the seductive 17th-century historical drama “Mary & George” has arrived on Starz. Now, those of us across the pond can properly fall in love with its lead Nicholas Galitzine in the English actor’s third major role of a breakout year.

Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar is making his English-language feature debut with “The Room Next Door,” which has heavy-weight actresses Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton in lead roles. There is a casting report that says Anya Taylor-Joy (“The Menu,” “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga”) has taken part in the pic as well.

Dua Lipa is enjoying herself. The British singer, who’s gearing up for the release of her new record “Radical Optimism,” has been traveling through Spain with her boyfriend, Callum Turner.

Alison Herman TV Critic It’s hard to get a handle on “Mary & George,” the 17th-century historical drama that premieres on Starz this week after last month’s initial run in the U.K. The tale of how the title characters (Julianne Moore and Nicholas Galitzine) enmeshed themselves in the court of King James I (Tony Curran) through George’s seduction is intricate enough on its own, packing a dizzying array of alliances, betrayals, breakups and reconciliations into seven 50-minute episodes.

Starz is really in the throes of a period renaissance. In the last few years, the cable channel has featured “Outlander,” “The Spanish Princess,” “The White Queen,” “The White Princess,” and just this month released “Mary & George” starring Julianne Moore (read our review).

Marc Malkin Senior Editor, Culture and Events Nicholas Galitzine may have told his parents that he has a lot of sex scenes in “Mary & George” with both women and men, but that didn’t keep things from getting awkward when his mom and dad were by his side at the series’ London premiere. “I was kind of in hysterics because there is nothing more uncomfortable than watching your son bed a number of characters even within the first few episodes,” the British actor, 29, tells me during a wide-ranging conversation on this week’s “Just for Variety” podcast.

Searchlight Pictures announced on Tuesday that its dramedy A Real Pain, marking the sophomore feature of actor-turned-filmmaker Jesse Eisenberg, will hit theaters in the thick of awards season, on October 18.

Alex Ritman Julianne Moore is set to star in “The Room Next Door,” the first full-length English-language feature from Spanish auteur Pedro Almodóvar. Moore — whose casting was confirmed on Thursday by Almodóvar’s production company El Deseo on social media — joins Tilda Swinton in the film. Swinton previously starred in Almodovar’s 2021 short “The Human Voice.” Swinton’s casting, which Almodóvar’s first spoke about last year, was also confirmed by El Deseo.
