Stop and search powers in Bury have been extended to eight Metrolink stations after a spate of violent knife crime in the borough since Monday. They wil stay in place until tomorrow afternoon.
Three victims were taken to hospital with stab wounds following an incident on Monday afternoon, off Murray Road, near Bury Market. Last night a knifeman tried to wound a person in Whitefield.
Yesterday a fourth suspect was arrested in connection with the triple stabbing. A 17-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of violent disorder and has since been bailed. The arrest was in relation to a stabbing that took place at around 12.15pm, which left three males with injuries that were not life-threatening.
A 17-year-old male and a 16-year-old male who were arrested on suspicion of violent disorder have both been released with strict bail conditions. Another 17-year-old male who was arrested on suspicion of a Section 18 assault has been released with no further action.
In the immediate afteramath of that incident a Section 60 order was imposed from 6.30pm on Monday covering areas of the town centre to 'help prevent further incidents.' Officers were able to stop and search anyone without suspicion in these areas until it was lifted at 6.30pm yesterday. But now a new order has been issued.
It follows an incident at 11pm last night, inwhich an offender with a knife lunging at someone at Whitefield Metrolink stop. Thankfully, no injuries were caused. It is understood the attacker went for a passenger as they stepped from a tram but they were able to swerve out of the way. The attacker then ran off.
The Section 60 will be in place until 2pm tomorrow (Friday 15 March 2024) covering areas of the town centre, Whitefield and the Metrolink
