Dr Michael Mosley has revealed the steps people need to follow to get better sleep - and there's one important technique that could help you drift off quickly at night.
Appearing on ITV's Lorraine, the health expert chatted to host Christine Lampard as he revealed that a total of 52% of us are not getting the recommended seven to nine hours of sleep per night.
The diet guru stated that poor quality of sleep could increase the likelihood of a number of health issues, and urged people to work out exactly why they are having issues nodding off.
He also shared simple technique that people can try to drift off. Rule number one is to try some slow, deep breathing, referred to by the expert as 4-2-4.
Dr Mosley explained that you should breathe in for four seconds, hold for two seconds and out for four seconds. Dr Mosley stressed that it "works really, really fast."
Discussing the importance of sleep - a time to rejuvenate your body - Dr Mosley added: "Sleep affects every organ in the body. When you're sleep deprived, you're irritable, and it's not fun. When you are in deep sleep, that's when your short-term memory gets shifted into long-term and if you are not getting enough sleep, that's really bad for your memory.
"But there's also a thing where toxins get washed out your brain during deep sleep, so again, a lack of deep sleep has been associated with an increase in dementia. Moving down through the body it can also raise your risk of heart disease and type two diabetes."
