Michael Mosley has explained how one simple muscle exercise can be the key to reducing high blood pressure and ease off pain.
The health guru - famed for his Fast 800 and 5:2 diets - has discussed how simply tensing and untensing your muscles can lower your blood pressure, reduce pain and ease off anxiety and stress. In a new segment of his podcast, Just One Thing, the health expert takes a deep dive into different techniques that can relax you and your body.
During the latest episode of Deep Calm with Michael Mosley, the expert explained the technique of progressive muscle relaxation and how it can benefit your health.
"By focusing on individual muscle groups, actively tensing them, and then relaxing them. signals are sent back to the brain, triggering a cascade of responses that change the way you think and feel," he said.
The expert noted that research has found that this is a popular technique used to reduce anxiety. He added: "It can also reduce blood pressure and even help to relieve pain."
In a 2023 study published in PubMed Central, the technique of progressive muscle relaxation was used and resulted "in a decrease in heart rate, blood pressure, metabolism, and respiratory rate. This state of relaxation also leads to a reduction in oxygen consumption and alleviation of muscle tension."
Professor Ian Robertson from Trinity College Dublin also featured on the podcast and described how this exercise can activate the parasympathetic nervous system - calming your mind and body.
Professor Robertson said: "The parasympathetic nervous system drives your body's natural relaxation response. It's a network of nerves that calms restores and reinvigorate your body and brain.
