Coronation Street is set to air its most shocking storyline yet, involving a tragic secret from over 20 years ago. Viewers will be heartbroken to learn that Toyah Battersby hid her stillborn baby.
The plot on the popular ITV soap will thicken when Toyah, played by Georgia Taylor, learns that the land where she hid the baby in a park after being attacked 23 years ago is due to be excavated, risking her secret being uncovered.
Back in 2001, Toyah was assaulted on her way home from a night out with Sam Kingston, portrayed by Scott Wright. She was discovered by Jason Grimshaw, played by Ryan Thomas, who helped her get home safely.
After reporting the incident to the police and undergoing a medical examination at the hospital, several male characters were considered suspects, including Peter Barlow, who was later cleared by a DNA test.
Toyah struggled to cope with the aftermath of the attack and developed agoraphobia. When she recognised the voice of her friend Phil Simmonds, played by Jack Deam, she realised he was her attacker, reports the Mirror.
As she tried to escape, Phil attempted to stop her but was knocked unconscious by Peter, who heard Toyah's cries for help. Phil was subsequently found guilty of the assault and sent to prison.
Toyah then left Weatherfield after reuniting with Spider and moving to London. According to a source speaking to The Sun, some fans might find faults with this particularly dark and big storyline. They added that the process - from the attack to its aftermath - resulting in her pregnancy and stillbirth all alone has "raised a few eyebrows on set".
