Stephen McGann is one of the four famous McGann brothers, who is best known for his role as Dr Patrick Turner in Call the Midwife. The new series of the hit BBC period drama returned earlier this year, much to the delight of fans as we follow a group of midwives and doctors working in East End London during the late 1950s and 1960s.
Heroic and kind-hearted Dr Patrick Turner has become a much-loved character on the show who has been portrayed by Stephen for over a decade, having joined the cast when Call The Midwife launched in 2012. It's worth noting that Stephen, aged 61, is also married to the creator of Call the Midwife, Heidi Thomas, reports Manchester Evening News.
The couple, who share a son named Dominic and live in Cambridge, are still very much in love after over 30 years of marriage. Stephen has often spoken fondly of his wife in interviews, stating that they remain professional when working on the BBC show, ensuring they do 'not interfere' in each other's roles.
The Liverpool-born actor previously penned a book titled Call the Midwife: A Labour of Love, celebrating 10 years of the show.
In an interview discussing the show and the importance of the NHS, McGann said: "When Call The Midwife began with 1957, we still saw diseases like rickets and TB (tuberculosis) diseases of poverty and lack of vitamins as well as the deadly infectious diseases like measles, polio and diphtheria." Reflecting on the tough conditions poor families faced before the NHS, Stephen connected with his own past. He shared: "My own dad was born in 1924, and his dad died when he was only five.
