Patients are being warned to expect long delays in hospitals across Greater Manchester. Four of the region's NHS trusts, which run eight A&E departments in total, have issued alerts to the public online today (March 12).
All four trusts are advising patients that their emergency departments are 'very busy'. Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT) and Northern Care Alliance (NCA) NHS Foundation Trust have both issued warnings to patients on their websites.
MFT runs Manchester Royal Infirmary, North Manchester General Hospital and Wythenshawe Hospital, which all have A&E departments. Meanwhile, NCA runs Fairfield General Hospital in Bury, the Royal Oldham Hospital and Salford Royal.

A post on the MFT website says: "Our emergency care department is currently very busy. Please only attend A&E for emergencies and life-threatening conditions."
The NCA 'alert' adds: "Our A&E and emergency departments are currently very busy. Please remember these should only be used for major injuries and serious illness."
The website for Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care, which runs Tameside Hospital, has also issued a similar 'alert' - telling patients to 'please consider if ED is the best place for your situation'. Bolton NHS Foundation Trust, which runs the Royal Bolton Hospital, currently says the emergency department is 'experiencing very high levels of activity'.
It says patients can expect to wait two to four hours. Earlier this morning, the trust said its A&E was 'extremely busy', with delays of more than four hours.
