A teenager made a shocking confession on a controversial reality game show – then tragically, two months later, her boyfriend murdered her. Ruth Thalia Sayas Sanchez, who was the first contestant on the Peruvian version of The Moment of Truth, won £3,000 after answering a series of difficult questions.
The concept of the TV game involved asking a total of 21 probing questions in six levels. Contestants would nab the cash prize if they answered each level correctly while strapped to a lie detector.
On the show, host Beto Ortiz put Ruth into a hot seat by asking quite personal inquiries. Most shockingly, he dropped this question: "Do you think your parents would be proud of you if they knew what you did for a living?" The question cornered the young woman. Her unsuspecting parents, seated in the studio audience, firmly believed she was a call centre employee.
Admitting the truth would shatter their perception, but lying mean forfeiting the hefty cash prize, reports the Daily Star. Striking a chord with international audiences, Stephanie Soo of the Rotten Mango podcast shed light on its impact, stating: "The final prize is $13,500 however in comparison to Peruvian minimum wage that would be a few years' worth of work." Ruth admitted that she was actually a nightclub hostess and had accepted money for sex on two occasions. She also revealed that she was only dating her boyfriend until "something better turns up".
She left the show with a prize of 15,000 Peruvian Soles (just over £3,200).
