A man has been charged after a capsized boat left one person dead.
William Murray McCubbin, 60, died after a fishing boat capsized while being towed from the shore at Port William Harbour in Dumfries and Galloway. The vessel reportedly began listing and sank into the sea at around 4.30pm on November 19, 2022.
He was pulled from the water and taken to Galloway Community Hospital but he later passed away.
Police have now confirmed a 48-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with the incident. A report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal.
William, a grandad from Annan, was affectionately known as 'Murray' to loved ones.
A family statement issued by lawyers Digby Brown said: “We welcome the update in the criminal investigation as it brings us closer to learning the truth about what happened at sea that day.
“The loss of Murray is something that shattered our family – he was a loving partner, father and Papa and there is not a day that goes by where we don’t think of him.
“We would like to thank our friends and family for their support over the last 16 months but we now request that our privacy is respected as we await the outcome of the criminal investigation.”
The Record previously told how horrified onlookers saw one man being retrieved from the boat and carried ashore before being given CPR.
At the time of the tragedy, an eyewitness said: "I couldn't believe what had just happened. The fishing boat was on the shore at the rocks at the mouth of Port William Harbour.
