Erik ten Hag refused to criticise Anthony Martial after his substitution was cheered by some Manchester United supporters in their 3-0 humbling by Bournemouth at Old Trafford.
Martial was a surprise starter ahead of Rasmus Hojlund but he made way for the Dane in the 56th minute with United 1-0 down.
The 28-year-old's removal in the 3-0 League Cup home ejection by Newcastle last month elicited cheers and the striker's approval ratings plumbed to new depths against Bournemouth.
Martial has not completed 90 minutes in the Premier League since January 2021 and he has only scored 18 United goals since the start of the 2020-21 season.

"Two weeks ago against Everton, he played a very good game," Ten Hag said when asked about the crowd's reaction. "He absolutely has the competencies and abilities to play, so I don't think it's fair after a performance like this to go to one player, we as a group failed altogether."
Martial is approaching the final six months of his contract and United must decide whether to trigger the one-year extension in his deal.
Hojlund is expected to replace Martial in the starting XI for United's final Champions League group stage game against Bayern Munich at Old Trafford on Tuesday.
United then take on Liverpool next Sunday at Anfield, where they are winless in their last eight and have only scored once. Liverpool have scored 18 against United during that run.
