There wasn’t a dry eye left in the house on Wednesday’s edition of EastEnders, when terminally ill Lola Pearce threw a superhero themed party to celebrate her grandpa Billy Mitchell’s birthday. In one of the last big family occasions she will live to see, Lola was determined to make it a special day as Billy turned 64 and was keen to make sure ever moment counted in order to help the people she loved make happy memories of their time together.
However in heartbreaking scenes before the party was due to take place, Billy broke down in tears as he was comforted by partner Honey, as he admitted it didn’t feel fair to be getting older and throwing a party, when his granddaughter would never get to. Hurt and overwhelmed by the gravity of the situation, Billy wrestled with his emotions, unaware that Lola had overheard him, yet with tears in her own eyes, Lola was all the more determined to plough ahead with her plans to clutch at joy while she still had the chance.
As the party got underway later in the episode, fans at home were treated to the spectacle of their favourite stars dressed in superhero outfits complete with capes, yet while Lola tried to take smiling photos with Billy, she noticed he wasn’t as happy as she would’ve liked and later pulled him on one side for a chat about how he was really feeling. Positive as ever, Lola tried to explain how she had wanted to make proper memories with proper smiles and celebrate the special day with her grandfather, but all it did was prompt Billy to ask: “How do you do it? How do you smile? Be brave?” After a beat, Lola then responded: “I’ve tried everything else.
Being angry, thinking it’s all unfair. It doesn’t help.
