Ever since George Knight arrived in EastEnders last Summer, it’s safe to say the character hasn’t exactly had the smoothest time in Walford. From discovering his ex-wife Rose Knight was actually an alter-ego for Cindy Beale, through to discovering he was bought by his adoptive parents in a shocking ‘farming’ storyline, George has been wrestling with some pretty big troubles.
Yet his life was turned upside down even further during Thursday night’s episode (11 April), when his adoptive father Eddie was successfully found guilty of murder, after brutally killing George’s birth father Henry Kofi Asare in a racially motivated attack. Prior to his conviction, George’s adoptive mum Gloria had begged her son to defend Eddie, but having seen firsthand his cruelty, later changed her tune and urged George to testify against him instead.
Just before Eddie could be sentenced, Gloria tragically suffered a massive heart attack and was rushed to hospital where staff informed a distraught George that her heart had suffered significant damage. In heartbreaking scenes, George spent what time he could with his mother, including telling her the news that Eddie had been found guilty something she was greatly relieved by.
In a particularly poignant moment, George also admitted that despite their difficulties and the circumstances surrounding his adoption, he still loved her unconditionally and affirmed that she would always be his mother. A tearful Gloria then confessed that when George was still a baby and wouldn’t settle, she used to contact his birth mother, Margaret for help, and that she had recorded a lullaby on a cassette tape to help soothe him.
