EastEnders did a world’s first in the episode that aired on Monday 22 April, as it saw two actors run the marathon as their characters. Jamie Borthwick and Emma Barton, who play Jay Brown and Honey Mitchell, ran the London marathon on Sunday 21 April.
The footage was then edited into the episode, which saw Honey and Jay running the marathon.
They were even cheered on by Callum Highway (Tony Clay), Peter Beale (Thomas Law) and Lauren Branning (Jacqueline Jossa) on the busy roads.
However, fans were quick to spot a mistake in the episode as their characters seemed to be in two places at once.
The editing also meant the episode was released later than usual on BBC iPlayer on Monday. In the morning, Jay and Honey were out and about in Walford, set in East London, but were very quickly seen at the marathon starting line, miles away.
Taking to X/Twitter, one person posted: "Yeah but how did they get to the start line in the fictional version? It was mid day sunshine in East London when they were having their pancakes!" While this one said: "EastEnders, right so have pancakes at approximately at 9am on Sunday in E20 in Walford Jay and Honey travelled back in time 5am to travel to Blackheath to get to the start line before 8am?! Stupid!" Prior to the 26.2 mile run, Emma said: “It’s pretty exciting, really, because it’s never been done before.
It’s a massive thing, isn’t it, the marathon? We’re a London-based show and we’re doing something that’s never been achieved before. So it is very exciting, it’s very nerve-wracking." While Jay and Honey were running to raise money for a brain tumour charity after losing Lola Pearce (Danielle Harold), Jamie and Emma got to choose who they ran for.
