Dermot O'Leary is the front runner to replace Phillip Schofield on ITV's This Morning if he was to be axed from the show, according to reports. Rumours of a "feud" between TV golden duo, Phillip, 61, and Holly Willoughby, 42, have been swirling as of late. Reports emerged earlier this week that the pair were "barely speaking," with Phil going on to make a statement.
Phil's official statement read: "The last few weeks haven't been easy for either of us." He continued: "As I have said before, Holly is my rock. We're the best of friends – as always, she is an incredible support on screen, behind the scenes and on the phone. Holly has always been there for me, through thick and thin.
And I've been there for her." However, insiders now say that Dermot would be the "ideal replacement" to host the show if Phillip were to leave. Former X Factor host Dermot, 49, has a regular Friday slot on the show alongside Alison Hammond, but there are talks that his role could be extended. A source told The Sun: "Phil's contract is up for renewal at the end of this year and as it stands, there are a number of people working on the show who think it's time for a shake-up".
"He [Dermot] is a good friend to Holly so naturally she would be thrilled if they were able to work together more often". OK! has contacted ITV and Dermot's reps for comment. Reports of a rift between the once-close Holly and Phillip emerged this week, with viewers of the show noticing a frosty tension when they were on-air.
