Alan Shearer believes Manchester City were technically right to get a penalty on Sunday but has questioned whether similar offences will be penalised in the future.
Manchester United were beaten 3-0 at Old Trafford by their city rivals, with Erling Haaland scoring either side of half-time before Phil Foden's close-range effort on 80 minutes. Erik ten Hag's side had started brightly but gave City a chance to score from the penalty spot.
Following a VAR review, Pep Guardiola's side were awarded a penalty after Rasmus Hojlund was adjudged to have pulled down Rodri in the area. The Denmark international did have hands on his opponent and while Shearer admits it should have been a penalty, he suggested similar offences will not be consistently penalised.

"In the grand scheme of things, he pulled him back therefore it was a penalty," Shearer told the Rest is Football Podcast. "But, if you’re going to give a penalty, you are going to have to give four or five penalties a game because that type of thing at most, if not every corner or free-kick.
"Yes, it was probably the right decision, but are we going to start seeing them given every game now? I don’t know."
United might look back on the decision as game-changing but City were utterly dominant from that moment forward. The away side controlled possession and territory, passing the ball between themselves and attacking at will.
