However, City dictated the game for long spells, knocking the ball around with ease. Amrabat struggled to get to grips with the contest, failing to offer United the control they needed in the middle.
He was deployed at the base of the engine room and was tasked with offering a defensive presence. City, however, found it too easy, knocking the ball around at their own free will.
And Schmeichel admitted he thought Amrabat was 'so far off the pace' that City could control proceedings with ease.
"I mean, he makes a change at half time, there's a reason for that because it wasn't working in midfield," Schmeichel told Premier League Productions. "Amrabat was so far off the pace Man City basically could do whatever they wanted.
