Radio presenter Adele Roberts is skating onto the ITV rink for Dancing on Ice this year, with the cancer survivor making history as the show's first contestant to skate with a stoma bag. Adele, who was diagnosed with stage two bowel cancer in 2021 and received the all-clear the the following year, now lives life with a stoma bag - a pouch on her stomach which allows waste to leave her body after losing part of her colon. However, the presenter has revealed that skating without part of her bowel means that she faces a new disadvantage in the competition - she has to learn how to balance once again.
"Being new to the world of stomas, I didn’t really know what to expect," she said. "I’ve realised that Audrey [which she calls her stoma] doesn’t like the ice. She’s very quiet.
She’s been a joy, actually. “I’ve noticed that because I’ve got a hole on the right side of my torso, I don’t have a centre where it used to be. I’m having to relearn how to use my body actually and rotation’s quite hard." Despite learning new movements from scratch, Adele admitted that it's helped her to "connect" with her body.
"I’ve got to really think about my movement on the ice but it’s helped me connect with my body, so it’s been a blessing as well," she said. "I wanted to do this to reclaim my body after what it’s been through. I feel like it’s allowing me to take back who I am again." Adele will be skating alongside professional partner Mark Hanretty on the show - and admitted that as a huge fan of the show, she was "starstruck" when meeting him.
"“I felt a bit bad for him because his partners have been stellar,” she sighed. “He’s had Kimberly Wyatt and Carley Stenson. I told him I’ll give it everything that I’ve got.
