Kevin Smith’s long-awaited Prince documentary to finally “see the light” of day

Kevin Smith’s long-awaited documentary about Prince is set to finally “see the light” of day”.The director had previously revealed the access he had to Prince before the musician’s death from a fentanyl overdose in 2016.Smith had spent hours talking to Prince at his Paisley Park Estate for the project and was given access-all-areas for several months according to reports. When asked by The Guardian what the chances were of the film coming to screens, Smith said: “Very high.”He went on: “The director of OJ: Made in America is making a documentary for Netflix, and came to the house to interview me. When they went to the vaults after Prince died, they found so much unreleased music and so many music videos, but the only footage of him talking was what I shot.“It’s extraordinary: he acts differently to how he ever acted in his entire life, and he talks for hours and hours.

Prince’s estate denied Sinead O’Connor use of ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ for new documentary

Prince‘s estate denied Sinead O’Connor use of ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ for her new documentary, it has been revealed.Nothing Compares, a new film directed by Kathryn Ferguson, will chronicle O’Connor’s rise to fame in the early ‘90s. In addition to input from people close to the singer, the documentary will include a new interview with O’Connor herself.A great part of this success came from her decision to cover ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ in 1990, with the song partially giving the film its title. However, the cover won’t appear in the film, with Prince’s half-sister and co-heir telling Billboard that the estate refused the request because “I didn’t feel she deserved to use the song.”Sharon Nelson added: “Nothing compares to Prince’s live version with Rosie Gaines that is featured on the ‘Hits 1‘ album and we are re-releasing that album on vinyl on November 4th.“I didn’t feel [Sinéad] deserved to use the song my brother wrote in her documentary so we declined. His version is the best.”Director Ferguson then added: “Initially we had intended to use the song, but we received a refusal (which as the rights holders, was their prerogative).“In the end we were very happy with that section of the film.

King Charles behind closed doors - ironed shoelaces, loving grandad and explosive temper

When King Charles III addressed the nation the day after the Queen’s death, his words spoke volumes about his relationship with his beloved mother and his sensitivity towards the nation’s mood. But what do we really know about the man who was born to rule and who spent decades waiting in the wings as the Windsors navigated the rapidly changing – and often turbulent – times? At public events in recent years we have often seen an affable and sometimes determined chap who clearly loves his wife and enjoys his life of service much more with her by his side.

Prince Philip rejected Queen's offer to be Prince Consort, Churchill revealed

Camilla is known so far as Queen Consort, but the Duke of Edinburgh rejected the offer of becoming Prince Consort in the early years of Elizabeth II’s reign. Philip, the longest-serving consort in British history, died in April 2021, after being married to the Queen for more than 73 years. The husband of a reigning Queen does not become a King and, unlike a Queen Consort, is not crowned or anointed at a coronation. No-nonsense Philip turned down the chance to use the title Prince Consort – which was given to Queen Victoria’s husband, Prince Albert – according to correspondence by then-prime minister Sir Winston Churchill in 1954.

Unearthed footage shows 11-year-old Prince arguing for better pay for teachers

Prince arguing for better pay for teachers when he was 11 years old has made its way onto the internet – watch it below. The rare footage – filmed in 1970 – was discovered in the archive room of Minneapolis television station WCCO by production manager Matt Liddy, who was searching the archives in order to place the teacher’s strike that took place in the same earlier this year into better context.According to Stereogum, once Liddy came across the footage, he “immediately just went out to the newsroom and started showing people and saying, ‘I’m not gonna tell you who I think this is, but who do you think this is?'”WCCO then brought in a specialist to restore audio to the footage, and they tracked down a local historian and a childhood friend of Prince’s to confirm that the child in the footage was indeed Prince. In the video, a young Prince is seen being interviewed about the Minneapolis teacher’s strike that occurred in 1970. “I think they should get a better education too cause, um, and I think they should get some more money cause they work, they be working extra hours for us and all that stuff,” he says. You can watch the short clip of Prince below:Meanwhile, Prince’s 1985 live concert film Prince and The Revolution: Live is set to be remastered for a new reissue. The late artist’s gig at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, New York on March 30, 1985, which was part of the ‘Purple Rain Tour’, was broadcast live internationally via satellite at the time, and was later released as Prince and The Revolution: Live. The singer’s estate has now partnered with Legacy Recordings to release a remastered reissue of the film, which will be available on vinyl (3xLP), CD (2xCD), Blu-ray and streaming services for the first time.

Prince’s estate in legal battle with makers of ‘Purple Rain’ wine

Prince‘s estate is currently locked in a legal battle with an Ohio winery which is selling a “Purple Rain Concord” wine. The late hitmaker’s estate sued L’uva Bella Winery last summer, demanding the cancellation of the ‘Purple Rain’ trademark awarded to the beverage company back in 2019. It argued that a “likelihood of confusion” and “false suggestion of a connection” with Prince were grounds for its petition. In a new filing obtained by Rolling Stone, the winery has put forth a bold new defence, claiming that the late musician’s famed disdain for alcohol means that consumers would never link the singer or his legacy to its product.“To the extent Prince was famous, he was equally famous for his disdain of alcohol,” lawyers for L’uva Bella Winery wrote in a new motion filed with the US Trademark Trial and Appeal Board.“Prince was a teetotaler who despised alcohol,” the filing continues.
