Vicious and dangerous knives that have been used to take the lives of people across Greater Manchester will be banned later this year following a public outcry about the use of long serrated blades. In legislation that will be brought before parliament tomorrow (January 25), anyone found in possession of a zombie-style knife or machete could face two years behind bars.
Since November 2020, there has been an average of 12 knife crimes taking place in Greater Manchester every single day, some involving zombie-style blades. Despite attempts to ban zombie knives in 2016, a loophole allowed the long serrated blades to still be sold, so long as they did not have violent or intimidating imagery on them.
The legislation will amend the Criminal Justice Act 1988 to make the sale, purchasing, and transportation of these knives illegal. Changes in the law will come into effect from September, though it is already illegal to carry any blade over three inches without a proper reason.

A knife amnesty will be introduced by the Government in the run-up to the September ban, where people possessing this style of blade will be able to surrender them without facing legal repercussions. Once the change in the law takes effect, anyone who still owns one of these knives could face time in prison.
The forthcoming Criminal Justice Bill 2023 will also extend the maximum sentence for possessing a banned weapon from six
