There are already some night buses available in the city-region, but most of them serve south Manchester and surrounding areas. They include the 142 and 143 which terminate in Didsbury and the 43 to Manchester Airport.
Mr Burnham said the pilot will focus on 'one or two' main routes in and out of the city centre. The first new night services will be launched on routes in the Wigan and Bolton areas where buses are now under public control.
The mayor has worked with his night time economy advisor Sacha Lord on the plans. He said: "The point of taking control of buses is to then make the system work for people in a way that it's not worked for people for a long time.
"So I've been saying, with Sacha, to TfGM for a while, we would like to see a proper night time strategy. We've started with the trams, so it's not as though we're not doing anything.
"But we now have a proposal coming forward shortly for a pilot for night buses. We're just waiting for the precise details.
