X Factor winner Matt Terry says he's "no longer afraid" to speak publicly about his sexuality as he comes out as a gay man. The singer, who won the ITV show in its 13th season, admitted he'd felt the need to keep his romance with a man secret when he rose to fame almost a decade ago, despite speculation.
Matt confessed in an interview that rumours about his sexuality and pressure from society made him keep his relationship under wraps when he starred on the ITV talent show in 2016, where he defeated Saara Aalto. During the series, he kept his other half hidden, deciding to keep parts of his personal life private amidst curiosity about his love life.
Today, Matt intends to express his journey through his songs, particularly in his latest track 'His Car', in which he expresses regret for not being honest about his sexuality earlier, as writes the Mirror.
In a heart-to-heart chat with Gay Times, Matt described the difficulty he experienced keeping his sexuality a secret and pronounced: "I'm very proud [of my sexuality], and I'm no longer afraid."
He shared that his new song was tough to record because it means a lot to him. "That's my story. That's my truth. And it's one of the most important stories I'm going to tell," he said to the magazine.
"I've been hiding who I was, and I haven't really opened up. I've never let anybody in. This song is an apology to the first man I fell in love with because I asked a lot of him."
Matt, who had taken a short break from music, added: "I said to him, 'You're not allowed to tell anyone about this' and he loved me enough to do so. Six, seven, years later, I realise that's not something we should be doing, and it's not something you should ask somebody."
