Work has begun on a major £33.6m project on a main route in Stockport.
Contractors have started work on site around the A34 corridor, also known as the Wilmslow-Handforth bypass, which runs from the junction of the M60 motorway to the A555 - serving Gatley, Cheadle and Heald Green. The government announced the investment in November last year, saying the route was regularly hit by traffic jams and bottlenecks.
The work is set to tackle congestion and reduce local journey times, particularly to Manchester Airport, and is also expected to generate more than £72m in direct economic benefits for Greater Manchester and Stockport. Contractors George Cox & Sons have started work today (April 2) near Gatley Road and Broadway.

Residents have been urged to 'bear with' the works, which are set to be carried out until 2028. According to Stockport Council, the first phases of works around Gatley Road, Wilmslow Road and Broadway will see:
A Stockport Council spokesperson previously said: "These improvements are part of the wider scheme that will also deliver improved access to the Cheadle Royal Business Park, the Stanley Green business area, a designated walking and cycling route along the A34 and include a new pedestrian subway for pupils and staff at Kingsway School."
Cllr Grace Baynham, Cabinet Member for Parks, Highways and Transport Services, said: "The A34 is a vital route in the borough, and this scheme will bring a host of benefits to not only the A34 corridor, but Stockport as a whole.
