The animated adventure from Universal Pictures, Illumination Entertainment and Nintendo is becoming the first release of 2023 to cross the $1 billion mark at the global box office. While “Mario Bros.” isn’t projected to cross the coveted threshold until Sunday, Universal is confident enough in the projections to declare the weekend a victory. If estimates hold, the video game adaptation will reach the $1 billion mark in 24 days. First debuting on April 5, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” has been a dominant force in theaters for the entire month. It still ranks as the top release on domestic charts, now in its fourth weekend of release.

Universal/Illumination’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” has broken yet another box office record for animation with an estimated $58 million in its third weekend. Just like last weekend, “Mario” has posted the highest total ever seen for an animated film in its third weekend and, at the moment, the seventh highest third weekend for any film.

Jack Black‘s ballad ‘Peaches’ from The Super Mario Bros. Movie has entered the Billboard Hot 100.The track, which is sung by Black’s character Bowser to Princess Peach, voiced by Anya Taylor-Joy, has debuted at Number 83 on the chart with 5.8million US streams and 6,000 downloads in its first week.

Exhibition cries for a supply of films at the box office, but a flood of titles means nothing if there isn’t any marketing money put behind it. It is now the highest-grossing film of 2023 at both the global and domestic box office, surpassing “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” (unlike that movie, people seem to have enjoyed this one). More important, it also makes “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” the biggest video game adaptation in history, topping the grosses of “Warcraft” and “Detective Pikachu.”
