Eccles-born Simpson joined United's academy as a boy and the Manchester Evening News understands he's back at the club to observe academy training and matches while he weighs up the next step in his career.
Simpson, who also does punditry work for MUTV, watched from the stands at Leigh Sports Village as the Under-19s defeated Galatasaray in the UEFA Youth League earlier this week.

Sources have indicated former players 'regularly engage' with the academy and Simpson spent over a decade at United.
He made his United debut in October 2007 and left Old Trafford three years later after making eight senior appearances.
The right-back then had spells with Newcastle and Queens Park Rangers before joining Leicester City, where he would make 30 starts in their remarkable, history-making Premier League winning season in 2015/2016.
Simpson played for Huddersfield Town and Bristol City after leaving Leicester and he spoke to the MEN in December about the difficulties professional footballers encounter when their contracts expire.
The 36-year-old has campaigned for better treatment for players after they retire and he began talks with the Premier League about better support away from the pitch last year.
Phil Jones is another former player to have been welcomed back to the academy and he's also studying his coaching badges.
It's understood welcoming academy graduates back to observe and learn is seen as mutually beneficial.
