Across England, more cases of whooping cough have been confirmed in the first month of 2024 than over the 10 months of last year and Greater Manchester is no exception.
Whooping cough, sometimes known as the 100-day cough', is a bacterial infection of the lungs and breathing tubes. It spreads very easily and can sometimes cause serious problems.
New figures from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) show there were 553 lab-confirmed cases in England this January. By the end of January last year, there had been just nine confirmed cases, and 505 by the end of October, fewer than in the first month of 2024.
While the UKHSA has not released data showing the locations where outbreaks have been confirmed, it is possible to map notifications of whooping cough.
These are alerts that GPs are required to send to the UKHSA every time they diagnose a case of what they believe to be whooping cough.
In January, GPs found 793 suspected cases in England, which means about 70% were later confirmed by lab tests, with a total number of cases coming up to 3,175 including cases in Wales.
In Greater Manchester, cases dropped slightly in the month of February, but the week ending 3rd March 2024 saw an increase again, with 15 suspected cases that week compared to the nine of the week before.
In the week of 3rd March, Manchester had the most suspected cases with seven recorded while Rochdale and Salford had two and Bury, Tameside, Trafford and Wigan had one. Oldham had no suspected cases that week but had done so throughout February. In all weeks of February and the first week of March it was Rochdale who had a steady number of suspected cases each week, ranging from 1 to 3 cases throughout the month.
