An expert has warned hat some homeowners may be accidentally poisoning their potted plants by giving them the wrong kind of water. Gene Fitzgerald, home water treatment expert at BOS has explained how hard water may be doing them more harm than good due to its high mineral content.
This type of water contains high levels of calcium and/or magnesium, which can be "harmful" causing health problems in pets, while preventing plants from absorbing vital nutrients to say alive.
He explained: "If a dog drinks too much hard water for too long a period, for example, they can develop conditions such as urinary tract and/or bladder infections, cystitis, urinary obstruction, crystalluria and stone formation.
"While plants can be overburdened by calcium and magnesium deposits, and prevented from imbibing other nutrients."
"All UK tap water is treated with disinfectant to make it safe for us to drink, added Gene. "Unfortunately, additives such as chlorine can prove the death knell for house plants, killing the helpful bacteria and soil microorganisms they need to thrive."
Hard water can be tackled with the help of a water softener - a device installed in the piping which removes minerals. But this carries its own problems, as it can add extra sodium into the water, which can also damage plants.
Gene advises that you examine water regularly for hardness, or invest in a distiller that can remove all excess additives from the liquid
