An urgent warning has been issued over fears that up to one million families could lose out on National Insurance credits, potentially costing them a happy retirement due to a Child Benefit error.
Claiming Child Benefit can also earn you National Insurance (NI) credits if you're not working or earning less than £123 per week. These credits are crucial for your state pension entitlement in the future, as it depends on the number of qualifying years of National Insurance you've accumulated.
To claim the full new state pension, which is worth £221.20 per week, most people need 35 qualifying National Insurance years. However, recent figures released by HMRC reveal that the number of families claiming Child Benefit has dropped from its peak of 7.92 million in 2012 to just 6.91 million, reports the Mirror.

This decrease represents one million families who could be missing out on essential National Insurance credits. Steve Webb, former pensions minister and current partner at consultancy LCP, explained how missing just one year of National Insurance credits could result in a reduction of £329 per year in state pension, or approximately £6,500 over an average 20-year retirement.
He commented: "These latest figures show the dramatic impact of the High Income Child Benefit Charge, knocking a million families off Child Benefit in just over a decade. An important knock-on effect is that hundreds of thousands of parents may have missed out on vital National Insurance credits towards their state pension."
