A campaign has been mounted against the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) cuts which has seen the loss of a water pump and jobs in Perth.
On September 4 the SFRS removed 10 pumps – including one in Perth – and reduced resources as the first phase of around £36 million of savings being made over the next four years.
FBU branch secretary for Perth Fire Station David Evans has warned “firefighters have genuine concerns for the safety of themselves and the public”.
The cuts came into force on Monday. Perth Fire Station has gone from having three water pumps to two with Perth’s third appliance operating purely as a dedicated aerial rescue vehicle. Perth’s workforce is also being cut with the loss of up to 15 firefighters.
David Evans said: “On September 4, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service removed 10 pumps from Scotland and reduced resources in other areas due to a real terms budget reduction that requires savings of over £30 million to be made. In Perth, this means that a pumping appliance has been lost and a dedicated aerial appliance will be introduced. Ten to 15 firefighter positions will be lost from Perth Fire Station.”
The FBU Perth rep said firefighters – “despite rock bottom morale” – were “scrambling to maintain a functioning service”.
He said: “For the public this will mean longer response times and less firefighters attending when they are needed the most. This is on the back of a loss of over 1000 firefighters and real terms pay cuts of over £4000 for firefighters in the last 10 years. With these cuts and more to come the public may well have to wait and wonder if and when a fire engine may show up. The lack of resources has already been felt and operational staff – despite rock bottom morale – are scrambling
