Two teenagers have been arrested and charged following a fire at Ayr’s Station Hotel.
The fire started in the empty building at around 3.30pm yesterday with seven fire service appliances - including a major incident support unit from Bellshill - attending to tackle the blaze.
Smoke was seen billowing from the south end of the building, as crews got to work putting out the flames. Ayr train station was evacuated with overhead lines switched off, impacting services to and from the town.
Police have now confirmed two 17-year-old boys have been arrested and charged in connection with the incident. They will appear at Ayr Sheriff Court at a later date.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Two male youths have been arrested and charged in connection with wilful fire-raising in Ayr. The incident happened around 3.55pm on Sunday, 28 May, 2023, in the Smith Street area.
"Officers attended and the fire was extinguished by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service. The two males, both aged 17, are expected to appear at Ayr Sheriff Court at a later date. Reports have been submitted to the Procurator Fiscal."
