TransPennine Express has provided an update on why all trains have been stopped between Manchester and Leeds this morning (Sunday, September 17).
Services on the rails have been halted, meaning passengers face a nightmare heading east-west and west-east across the north. Now, a spokesperson has confirmed why a safety inspection is taking place in Brighouse, West Yorkshire, which is the reason for the chaos.
A spokesperson for the company said: "Currently they are inspecting the track and the ground underneath the track because there's a void underneath due to ground works on the Calder Vale line.

"We have got rail replacement buses. What they are looking at doing is to pause the work through Huddersfield, so we can run trains on the normal route and divert them. We don't currently have a timescale for that yet."
In a further update on TPE’s website, the advice for passengers is as follows: “Rail replacement transport has been requested and are in operation between the following:
Manchester Victoria and Leeds via Dewsbury
Manchester Piccadilly and Huddersfield (calling at local stations)
Huddersfield to Leeds (calling at local stations)
“Customers are advised that TransPennine Express tickets will be accepted on:
Northern services via any reasonable route
Metrolink services between Manchester Piccadilly and Manchester Victoria in both directions
CrossCountry services between Sheffield and Newcastle. Customers are advised to board a TransPennine Express service from Manchester Piccadilly to Sheffield to connect with CrossCountry services to Newcastle
