Evans thought he had given United the lead midway through the first half when he expertly moved away from his marker to head home at Turf Moor. However, VAR ruled out the goal as Hojlund was in an offside position as the Northern Irish centre-back headed the ball.

Reflecting on the decision on Sky Sports' Ref Watch, Gallagher claimed this was evidence of the officials learning from previous mistakes.

He explained: "I think they [the referees] have learnt and they have moved on. As well as that, I think it is a good VAR intervention.
"If you look, he [Hojlund] is actually in contact with the goalkeeper, physical contact, so he had to be impeding him and he was in an offside position. So I think it was a very good intervention and also what I would say is it was cleared up very, very quickly. VAR looked at it, relayed it to the referee, the game went on."
In the second half, Sergio Reguilon was shown a yellow card for waving an imaginary yellow card at Tony Harrington. Looking back at this decision, Gallagher admitted he was shocked this behaviour was still going on.
