Salford’s Chapel Street has been something of a development hotspot in recent years with blocks and flats springing up and a thriving food and drink scene. Yet hidden away in a museum at the end of the road is a very different street to the one outside.
Overlooking Peel Park on the Crescent is the magnificent red-brick Salford Museum and Art Gallery. It may not attract as much attention as Manchester’s museums, yet it packs a punch with an impressive collections of paintings, sculptures and artwork housed in spacious galleries.
Among the exhibitions is Lark Hill Place, an authentic recreation of a Victorian Street which instantly transports you back in time. The life-size street features original shop fronts and objects which instantly immerse you in daily life in Salford all those years ago.

Lark Hill Place is named after the mansion house built on the site of the museum by James Ackers in around the 18th or 19th centuries. The estate was purchased by public subscription for a park in 1846 and the building opened as England’s first free public library in 1850. It later developed into a museum and art gallery.
However, in 1935 the original Georgian mansion was found unsafe and it was demolished and replaced with the current wing. During the 1940s the City Council began clearing Salford’s slum terraces and in 1955 the museum re-created a small street from salvaged features from houses and shops that would have otherwise been demolished. This then became Lark Hill Place.
