Zuzana Točíková Vojteková Guest Contributor The first part of “The Strangers,” a trilogy directed by Renny Harlin and produced by Lionsgate, has started production in Slovakia. Rastislav Kuril’s Frame Film is servicing the production in the country. The producers registered for the 33% cash rebate at the Slovak Audiovisual Fund in June, Film New Europe reports. Filming on the first part of the trilogy started in August on locations in and around Bratislava. The trilogy is a remake of the 2008 film “The Strangers,” which was written and directed by Bryan Bertino, with Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman starring. Together with its 2018 sequel “The Strangers: Prey at Night,” it became a cult horror classic.

EJ Panaligan editor Sublime is the latest rock band getting the biopic treatment. Sony’s 3000 Pictures is developing a movie with “Hunger Games” director Francis Lawrence about the group from Long Beach, Calif. The band is best known for its fusion of reggae, punk, ska and hip-hop, all wrapped into a subgenre of alternative rock that they were at the forefront of throughout the 1990s. Songs like “What I Got,” “Santeria” and “Doin’ Time” became radio hits on local rock stations such as Los Angeles’ KROQ. The band’s lead singer, Bradley Nowell, died in May 1996 from a drug overdose, with the band’s final self-titled album releasing shortly after.

The story follows Jo, a lifestyle influencer whose reality begins to unravel as she and her husband bring their newborn home from the hospital. “There are strange parallels,” the filmmaker says over iced coffee and pain au chocolat (which goes tragically uneaten) at a cafe near New York City’s Bryant Park. “Not to overwork a metaphor, but it’s putting something into the world that’s going to have a life without you.”
