Blair Witch Project team have called news of the upcoming remake “bittersweet”.Just days ago, it was announced that the seminal film was getting a reboot at CinemaCon. Since the 1999 original, there have been two sequels in 2000 and 2016, making this remake the fourth movie in the series.Though 2016’s Blair Witch director Roy Lee is slated to return, Ben Rock (original production designer) has claimed that no one from the original film – including co-directors Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez – were involved in any following movies, adding in comments to The Hollywood Reporter that news of the reboot is “bittersweet”.“I do think that what has happened twice now was that the original creators were overlooked, and other people were brought in, all of whom were good,” Rock said.

Following their collaboration on horror pic Imaginary, Lionsgate and Blumhouse are partnering again, this time to develop and produce a brand new take on The Blair Witch Project. This will be the first film in a multi-picture pact with Blumhouse reimagining horror classics from the Lionsgate library. The announcement was made by Adam Fogelson, chair, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, and Jason Blum, founder and CEO of Blumhouse during Lionsgate’s CinemaCon presentation this morning.

First up under the collaboration is “Janus,” written by Nate Atkins (“Blood-Red Ox”) and Jason Zada (“The Forest,” “Take this Lollipop”) with Zada also directing. It will follow three band members seeking refuge in an old farmhouse where they encounter a woman harboring an unspeakable secret. Schneider and Joe Heath will produce alongside Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash, who will bring his musical expertise and oversight to the film. The cast includes Alex Neustaedter (“American Rust”), Natalie Alyn Lind (“Big Sky”), Jack Kilmer (“Lords of Chaos”) and Grace Van Dien (“Stranger Things”), along with M.C. Gainey (“Emperor”). Filming will commence later this year in Puerto Rico.
