More control over our ‘economic destiny’ - that’s what the Chancellor promised while delivering his first Budget earlier this year. Back then Jeremy Hunt said the agreement of a new ‘Trailblazer’ devolution deal for Greater Manchester would give the mayor more financial freedom and make the combined authority more like a government department.
But five months later, questions remain about the level of scrutiny Andy Burnham will face as he takes on more powers and a single local budget.
Following pressure from local Conservative MPs, Mr Burnham and the 10 council leaders will be publicly scrutinised on a quarterly basis as part of the new devolution deal - which gives the Labour mayor more control over technical education, housing standards and local trains.
Mr Burnham also has twice-yearly police accountability meetings open to all elected councillors and MPs in the region. And he takes public questions on a weekly basis during a phone-in on BBC Radio Manchester.
But some local politicians say this isn’t enough. They have called for a London-style assembly for Greater Manchester, as Nick Jackson reports. London Assembly members investigate issues affecting the capital, question the mayor ten times a year and conduct public meetings.
