Right on the edge of Greater Manchester in Horwich, the Wilderswood Plantation is an area of woodland providing stunning autumnal scenery as far as the eye can see. Located on the southern flank of Winter Hill, south of George’s Lane, it’s a heavily wooded area where you can escape into a different world among the trees.

Although it may seem like an area untouched by people for centuries, Wilderswood was actually much smaller than it is today, mainly confined to the area of Wilder’s Clough. Most of the area was once bare moorland with just a few clumps of trees, while the area would have been busy with coal mining activities.
In 1959 the wider area was planted with beech, alder, Corsican and Lodgepole pines to become the Wilderswood Plantation. Later Hybrid Larch was planted to replace the dead pines.
