With the number of children and young adults reading on the rise, books have made a huge comeback as a hobby for people looking to take a break from their TV screens. While some people have been avid readers all their lives, it took the pandemic to hit for many former bookworms to crawl back out and wipe the dust off their favourite classics.
For book-lover Sarah Ferrige, she reignited her passion for reading over lockdown, and three years on the 21-year-old from Preston hasn’t put one down since.
Sarah, along with her mates Jahaan and Hannah, found that every time they would meet up the friends could not resist talking about books. In July 2022, the three decided to broaden their book circle by setting up a city centre book club called The Manchester Book Society.

“We were already friends before we set up the book club, and we found every time we met up we were talking about books - what we were reading, and what we liked and disliked about it.
“So we just thought it would be really nice to do this with other people and get to meet new friends and socialise in that way. We created our Instagram page and began promoting it, letting people know what we were doing if they were interested in joining.
“From the get-go, we noticed there was huge interest in it. To begin with, we just found pubs and bars like The Cosy Club in Manchester - anywhere that would accommodate us.
“Then it started to take off only a few months in so we were really lucky to get the shared workspace that we’re in now at Bold Bauhaus in the city.”
