The Times has revealed its 100 "best places to stay" in the UK for 2023 - and nine Scottish hotels made the list.
The newspaper unveiled its annual list on Friday, with The Retreat at Elcot Park in Berkshire claiming the top spot for the whole of the UK. It was praised by The Times for being "affordable" and "fun", while attention was also given to its "stylish spaces".
Elsewhere, the list was divided into Scotland, Wales, and each region of England. The Gleneagles Townhouse in Edinburgh was crowned Scottish hotel of the year.
The Gleneagles Townhouse, which was called a "pleasure palace" by The Times, is a new luxury hotel in the capital that features 22 unique boutique bedrooms. It also includes an all-day restaurant and bar that is open to the public, and a rooftop bar overlooking the city that serves up a "sophisticated" menu of cocktails.
Meanwhile, Mingary Castle in the Highland village of Kilchoan was crowned Foodie hotel of the year. The luxury castle "has seen Vikings, sieges, royalty, assassinations and many a power struggle" in its 700-year history.
Standing on the rocky south coast of the Ardnamurchan peninsula, the castle is grand both inside and out, with a range of unique opulent suites. However, as The Times states, the food is the star of the hotel, offering up "virtuoso dining" in its two AA rosette restaurant.
Other Scottish hotels to make the list include The Taybank in Perth and Kinross—originally a trad-music pub—and Revolver in Glasgow, which bills itself as Scotland’s first LGBTQ+ hotel. Rounding out the Scottish list are The Fife Arms in Aberdeenshire, Virgin Hotel Edinburgh, Royal Marine Hotel in Brora, Gleneagles in Perth and Kinross, and The Dipping Lugger in Ullapool.
