The summer holidays aren’t over yet which means there’s still time to squeeze in a trip to the beach. Even if wall-to-wall sunshine isn't in the forecast, it’s always nice to visit the coast and soak up the sea views.
Luckily for us there’s no shortage of beaches to visit nearby, each offering something different. But one beach in particular is especially worth checking out before the holidays come to an end.
Formby Beach, around an hour’s drive away from Greater Manchester, was named one of the best beaches in the UK by The Sunday Times. Sandwiched between Southport and Crosby, Formby made the list thanks to its “miles of pristine sand, dunes, pine forest, red squirrels, fossils and ocean liners”.

A world away from Blackpool, Formby Beach is a “wild and fascinating” place. You won’t find exhilarating rides, noisy arcades or busy fish and chip shops here.
Instead you’ll come across hundreds of acres of beautiful sand dunes, backed by a beautiful pine forest. The beach has a long stretch of golden sand and on a clear day you can see as far as the Cumbrian mountains.
Owned by the National Trust, Formby Beach is a haven for wildlife and it’s home to several rare species, including natterjack toads and red squirrels. Throughout the area are dozens of walks you can take, including trails through the trees which kids will love to explore.
The beach is dog-friendly, so you don’t have to leave your four-legged friend at home. As there aren’t any facilities at Formby Beach, it’s best to bring your own picnic - and you couldn’t wish for more beautiful scenery when it comes to al fresco dining.
