The best and brightest stars of the UK’s favourite soaps were out in force on Saturday evening as the British Soap Awards once again got underway for the 24th year. From Emmerdale to Coronation Street, EastEnders to Hollyoaks, there was no shortage of talent in this year’s nail biting string of nominations.

The winner of Britain's Got Talent 2023 has been announced as Viggo Venn, with Lillianna Clifton coming in second place and Cillian O'Connor in third.The champion, who was crowned in tonight's live TV final on ITV will go on to perform in front of King Charles, and other members of the royal family at the Royal Variety Performance on November 30 2023. The 2022-23 broadcast television season has officially concluded with NBC and CBS back at the top of the Nielsen charts. NBC’s football coverage stole the show, but among scripted programming NCIS was the clear winner, though the One Chicago franchise held strong as well. Broadcast comedies and dramas dominated the list of most watched scripted series on ad-supported linear networks this past season with one major exception, Paramount Network’s Yellowstone, which topped them all with 11.5M viewers.

At Latham & Watkins, Deutsch was global co-chair of the firm’s entertainment, sports, and media group.    Deutsch’s move boosts the already impressive Paul Hastings entertainment and media team. Ricky Gervais has said he “can’t wait to see” how Australia intends to modernise The Office. On Tuesday (30 May), it was announced that Australian comedian Felicity Ward will lead the country’s forthcoming re-envisioning of the popular British sitcom. While Prime Video’s The Office: Australia is the 13th version of the workplace mockumentary series, it will be the first-ever female-led version.

Mammoth Lakes Film Festival. The full winners list was announced Tuesday following the Closing Night Award Ceremony on Sunday. This year, the festival screened over 100 feature and short films and awarded over $45,000 worth of prizes to winners. “Unicorn Boy” was named Best Narrative Feature while “Where the Road Leads” earned the Best International Narrative Feature award from both the festival jury and audience. Best Documentary Feature went to Luke Lorentzen’s “A Still Small Voice” and the Best International Documentary Feature was given to Nisha Kumari Pahuja’s “To Kill A Tiger.” The Bravery Award for documentary features was given to Tim Grant & Andy McMillan’s “Mississippi River Styx.”

Charles Barkley has the uncanny talent of making double entendres without realizing it, and he did it again this week when he was challenged to do his best Boston accent on “NBA on TNT.” Barkley was at the TD Garden, home of the Boston Celtics, following Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals against the Miami Heat. Along with fellow analysts Shaquille O’Neal and Kenny Smith, Barkley tried his best attempt at a Boston accent by reading the phrase, “Saw Ernie at Fenway Park eating chowder on top of the Monster.” After his expectedly terrible attempt, Barkley noted to host Ernie Johnson that he had never been to a Boston Red Sox game at Fenway and always wanted to sit on top of the Green Monster, the famous left field wall.

Charna Flam Subject Matter, the nonprofit organization that supports social issue documentary films and other nonprofits, announced that its second annual round of grantees have been awarded a total of $100,000. Subject Matter and Tribeca Festival unveiled that Tribeca’s Documentary Film Program’s “Breaking the News” and “Every Body” have both been awarded $25,000 grants. The documentaries’ corresponding nonprofits, The 19th* nonprofit with “Breaking the News” and interACT nonprofit with “Every Body,” have also received $25,000 grants. Subject Matter will present “Breaking the News” and “Every Body” at the Tribeca Festival in an effort to raise awareness and support for the selected nonprofits.

The UK’s Ivors Academy yesterday presented its Ivor Novello Awards, celebrating the best in songs and songwriting from the last year. Wet Leg’s Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers were declared Songwriters Of The Year, while Raye, 070 Shake and Mike Sabath took the prize for Best Contemporary Song for ‘Escapism’.There were also the customary awards for career-long achievements, with the members of James being presented an Icon Award; Kamille being celebrated for her Outstanding Song Collection; Debbie Harry and Chris Stein getting a Special International Award; and Sting being granted an Academy Fellowship.“On behalf of The Ivors Academy of songwriters and composers I wholeheartedly congratulate all of our winners”, says Academy Chair Tom Gray.

Thania Garcia Wet Leg’s Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers took home the Ivor Novello award in the coveted songwriter of the year category at the 2023 ceremony on Thursday in London’s Grosvenor House. The event honored 30 music-makers across 14 categories in recognition of songwriting and screen composition. Wet Leg’s self-titled debut album was one of the most-talked-about releases of the last year and earned the indie rockers their first Brit awards and a pair of Grammys. The Ivor judges described Teasdale and Chambers’ writing, citing singles “Wet Dream” and “Chaise Lounge,” as “fresh, unapologetic and direct, with surprising melodies that demand attention.”
