Shoppers have been pronouncing Aldi and Lidl wrong for years

When it comes to picking up your weekly shop for less, Aldi and Lidl have arguably come out on top as the most popular supermarkets for shoppers.

Both supermarkets have become iconic in their own right over the years and, by now, we are pretty sure that everyone has their weekly trip to either one all sorted.

From their premium products with small price-tags to a range of unique 'middle aisle' items, both supermarkets have earned quite the cult status among shoppers.

However, there may be one thing that you don't have sorted and it may take you by surprise - the pronunciation of their name.

That's right, both of the German grocers have recently clarified how we should be saying their names and we are not ashamed to admit that we've had it wrong all along.

For those of you who do not have the German accent sorted, Aldi and Lidl have provided some handy tips on how to best get their names correct, reports My London.

Aldi's is arguably the easiest to pronounce, as the retailer confirmed that, no, we should not be saying "all-di", as the first vowel should not be elongated.

Instead, the first vowel is supposed to be said much harsher, kind of similar to how we would pronounce Al in Al Pacino, says the supermarket.

While that change isn't so difficult, it turns out that Lidl is just that tad bit more complex, and this is mainly down to different dialects and the way we speak depending where we are from.

In the brands home country - Germany - its official pronunciation is Lee-dil.

Whereas, we over here in Scotland tend to pronounce it a bit simpler as just Lidl, with a short 'li' at the start of the name.

Despite their interesting pronunciations, both retailers continue to grow at a rapid rate.
