‘The Fall Guy’ Review: Ryan Gosling Is a Lover and a (Stunt) Fighter in Surprisingly Romantic Reboot of ’80s Action Show

Peter Debruge Chief Film Critic In 99% of Hollywood movies, the goal is to make the stunt work invisible. Audiences are supposed to believe that the star — or better yet, the character he plays — put his own life at risk jumping off buildings, blowing up cars or duking it out with squads of bad guys. In “The Fall Guy,” the stuntman gets to be the hero (of an insanely overcomplicated story), while the star is a prima donna who claims to do all his own stunts but needs his double to step in when things get tough.

‘Cabrini’ Review: A Solemn Old-School Biopic Of America’s First Saint

They say that conflict is the essence of drama, and in this handsome but impossibly somber biopic there is almost nothing but conflict. Following up last year’s surprise hit Sound of Freedom, director Alejandro Monteverde neatly sidesteps a repeat of that film’s controversy with a story that cannot remotely be interpreted as a QAnon allegory. Based on the true story of Frances Xavier Cabrini — literally the first American saint — this takes a most un-MAGA viewpoint on immigration, painting an unvarnished portrait of racism in a country that is supposed to embrace the tired and the poor.

‘Manhunt’ Review: History Comes To Life In Tense, Character-Driven Series About the Lincoln Assassination

The natural question about Apple TV+’s “Manhunt,” based on the book “Manhunt: The 12-Day Chase for Lincoln’s Killer” by James L. Swanson, is going to be “Why now?” It does not seem coincidental that a story that’s essentially about one of the times our democracy was at its most fragile just happens to be coming out during one of the most contentious and divisive election years in U.S.

Porn Star Rocco Siffredi’s Netflix Bio-Series ‘Supersex’ Is More Tedious Than Sexy: TV Review

Aramide Tinubu Loosely based on the experiences of real-life porn sensation Rocco Siffredi, known as the “Italian Stallion,” Netflix’s “Supersex” isn’t actually very sexy at all. Instead, the seven-part series, created by Francesca Manieri, is a tale about family, masculinity and toxic bonds. While the show, which stars Alessandro Borghi in the lead role, has some interesting chapters, the surrealist elements — including some hallucinatory moments and the bizarre way some of the sex scenes are filmed — make it more than a biographical account.
