The dad of a five-year-old schoolboy whose skin doesn't shed due to a rare condition says cruel classmates are picking at his skin.
JJ Finegan, a p1 student, was born with ARCI ichthyosis - a mutated gene that prevents the body from naturally shedding skin cells. His condition is so severe, a specialist told the family he'd never seen a case like it in 30 years.
The youngster told his dad Jordan that other children were pulling at his skin and asking why he was different after his second day of primary school.
Dad Jordan, from Gourock, said he was heartbroken after catching JJ looking at himself in the mirror and telling himself he wasn't beautiful.
Jordan, 30, told the Record: "We were quite shocked when he came home and said someone was 'bullying him'.
"Some of his classmates have been picking at his skin. His older sister has had people asking what is wrong with her wee brother.
"It's a lot for a wee boy to take. As a parent you want to protect your child but I feel helpless while he is at school.
"He told me recently while looking in the mirror that he isn't beautiful and it just broke my heart."
ARCI ichthyosis causes older cells to build up on the skin’s surface, leading to scaling and thickened skin.
The schoolboy has to bathe for several hours a day and has lotion applied to his painful skin.
He also doesn't have the ability to sweat, so his parents have to be vigilant at all times, as it is easy for him to overheat.
He has regular visits with a dermatologist and struggles with his hearing as skin blocks his ears.
ARCI ichthyosis is estimated to occur in approximately 1 in 200,000 births but JJ's case was so severe when he was born he looked like a burns victim and his eyelids turned inside out.
