Scots caught up in the Moroccan earthquake have spoken of the moment the shock hit their Marrakesh hotel.
“People started running away from the building towards an empty space,” said neurology nurse Lorraine McColvin, 53, from Drumoyne. "It took a bit to realise what was happening then everyone started running. You could see the shock in their faces.
Lorraine and her husband Gerry, 54 - a fetal medicine manager at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow - are on holiday at the Be Live resort 6.8 kilometres from Marrakesh city centre with their friends Adam, 48, and Cheryl McMillan, 44, Scots from Corby.
They were sitting chatting and listening to some music outside when the tremors struck.
“There was almost like a rippling effect on the ground,” recalled Adam. "And a rumbling sound like a truck going by.”
Gerry added: ”We could see the walls shaking and that’s when people ran to find an empty space. I am amazed no windows were broken.
“The water in the pool was rippling so everyone knew something was very wrong.”
“It seemed to go on for ages then it stopped and started again,”said Cheryl. “It must have been awful for the people caught up in it in Marrakesh.”
Staff at the hotel ushered everyone outside then supplied them with water while they went round and checked the rooms.
Incredibly, holidaymakers who had been in transit arrived with their suitcases in the middle of the mayhem. Lorraine reported they had already received an email from easyjet but were yet to try and contact the company.
Gerry added they were fully prepared to volunteer to help should they be needed.
