Despite the assurances of Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige that every Marvel title can exist on its own terms, the third “Ant-Man” film is neck deep in series lore as it launches Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe — and the second act of the Multiverse Saga. Peyton Reed’s “Ant-Man” films have generally served as a kind of palate cleanser to the world-ending stakes of the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe. Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang is just an ordinary dude, or so they keep telling us, who still can’t really believe that he’s part of the Avengers at all. He gets to be the wide-eyed middle-aged fanboy of the group in those films. In his own films, he’s just living a blue-sky life in San Francisco as an affable single dad and ex-con who was once fired from Baskin Robbins and who has occasional enemies to defeat.

With the Avengers: Endgame now history for a few years, and its place in the boxoffice realm currently challenged more by Avatars than any one Marvel character, the MCU, under orders from Marvel Chief Kevin Feige is now entering Phase 5, and using the third cinematic incarnation of Ant-Man and the full-blooded emergence of multi-villain Kang The Conqueror to carry it forward in what is essentially a stand-alone transition movie. As such Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania is a mixed bag, still containing the lighter comedy of the 2015 original and 2018 followup, both set in San Francisco, but now taking us deep into a subatomic universe where the familial characters will experience both good and evil forces, some wacky new creatures that look like they are straight out of a Star Wars bar, and a mission to save this dizzying community of colorful beings who are being terroized by another comic book legend now embodied by the imposing and talented Jonathan Majors, clearly aiming to be the next major player in the MCU.

Springsteen and his E Street Band have added 18 cities to their U.S. leg of the tour, including San Francisco, Los Angeles, and MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. The fact that some of the added gigs are in stadiums instead of arenas may ameliorate at least some of those concerns, though. The second leg of the North American tour begins August 9 with a show at Chicago’s Wrigley Field and ends at the close of fall back indoors with shows at L.A.’s Forum on Dec. 4 and 6 and San Francisco’s Chase Center on Dec. 8. Altogether, these additions add up to 22 gigs in 18 cities, with Philadelphia, East Rutherford, NJ, Toronto and L.A. being the four cities that are getting two-night stands — although wide-open holes in the calendar surely allow for additions as these dates sell out.
